Windermere Canoe Kayak 11th Annual Summer Solstice Race, 22nd June 2019

The Windermere Summer Solstice Lake Race is an exciting event held on England’s longest lake, at the heart of the beautiful Lake District National Park. The race involves paddlers of all abilities completing either the half or full length of Windermere.

Over the years we have seen everything from surf skis, canoes, stand-up paddleboards, dragon boats through to sit-on- top kayaks and wooden canoes. The aim of the game is to get all paddlers involved, enjoying England’s longest lake on the longest day of the year (or as near to as possible) – some are there just for the challenge of the journey and others to take the race record!

These are options for paddlers to choose from:

1 - LONG COURSE (10.5 Miles) – (Experienced only) Taking place on SATURDAY 22ND JUNE starting at Waterhead, Ambleside finishing at Fell foot.

2 - SHORT COURSE (5.5 Miles)- This will take place on the SATURDAY 22ND JUNE (Any Board/Boat Class) - £22 Entry (You have 4 hours to complete the challenge). This is a great way to join the event and complete some of the distance without the pressure of racing. Route to be announced.

There will be a coach provided to offer a shuttle from Fell Foot (finish) to Waterhead(start) on Saturday 22nd for the long course participants to get everyone to the race start on time. Places on the coach are limited to 50 people so please confirm if you require this when entering.

THE LONG COURSE ROUTE (Subject to change)

Starting off from Waterhead, Ambleside Postcode: LA22 0EX ( We will be based at the main beach next to the ferry pier

THE COURSE  - west side

From Ambleside head south towards the West shore of Windermere, please be aware of ferries coming in and out of Ambleside and give way to other craft.

By following the west shore you cut through the inside of the dog leg shape of Windermere behind Belle Isle, again please be aware of ferries and other craft  whilst around the islands.

This roughly marks the half way point of the race as you pass the Car Ferry. Please be aware of the car ferry as it runs on two cables under the water. Ensure the ferry is clear before attempting to cross the ferry line. On approach predict the position of the ferry and which way its travelling to avoid stopping and waiting for it.

From the Car Ferry head straight south towards Stores Temple, A wall on the east side heading into the lake with a small building on the end. From this point head south towards the east shore cutting the final small bend in the Lake. Finally you will start to see the yachts and Ferry port (beware of ferries) at the south end of the lake for the home straight

As Windermere narrows Fell foot National Trust site and the finish line become visible. There will be finishing markers (buoys) and paddlers are asked to keep on their left, making it easier for scorers to spot race numbers. Please vacate the finish line quickly to leave room for other competitors. Once you cross the finish line you will be at the south end of the park, from here you need to turn around and paddle to the north end of the park (approx 200m) where there is the new watersports centre and slipways to leave the water. There is access here for vehicles to collect your craft.
