Introduction to Downwinding
Are you proficient on small bumpy water and want to move towards another discipline SUP journey? Downwinding is easily one of the most fun experiences you can have on your SUP - come and try with one of our fully qualified instructors. This is a half /full day skills based course on completion you will be able to;
- Identify Types of wind direction and strength
- SUP downwinding hazards
- Self rescue techniques at 500 metres offshore
- Wipe-out techniques in high wind conditions
- SUP etiquette (rights of way)
- Planning and logistics including launch and arrival points
- Identify SUP downwind paddle board and equipment
- Wave mechanics to maximize performance
- Strategy to catch and ride "bumps”
- Maintaining momentum
- Downwind paddling techniques
- Stroke rates and length
- Foot placement, rail steering, maximum board run, sweet spot on board
Prerequisites:
- Swim 200 metres (650 ft), without stopping
- Confident in paddling distances up to 10 km (6 miles)
- Paddle competently in exposed water
