In Response to the Recent Hawkshead Car Ferry Closure

In response to the recent Hawkshead Car Ferry closure:

(Ferry Nab to Ferry House, Hawkshead)

As a result of the recent car ferry closure, one of our many suggested bike hire routes has been affected. Although clients can no longer use the car ferry to travel to the western side of Lake Windermere, there is a ferry from Brockhole to Bark Barn. This service requires cyclists to be confident in road riding, as although there is a shared cycle pathway.

While these services exist, Windermere Lake Cruises advise that these services are subject to daily changes, and travellers should plan their route in advance. Warm weather can also put further strain on this service.

In order to get the most out of your bike hire, in spite of this disruption, we have listed some advice and alternative options:

  • If you would like to visit the western side: please aim to arrive for your bike hire at 9:00am. The earlier ferries are subject to less traffic.

  • Our Waterhead site (open on weekends) also offers bike hire, whereby you can access the western side of Lake Windermere without the use of a ferry. From July 7th, this will be open everyday! Here you can also access trails to Rydal Water, Grasmere, Hawkshead, Wray Castle, and more…

As you can imagine, this is challenging for us to respond to while the replacement service is newly forming, as its operation is out of our control. We will be contacting customers to offer alternatives

We will NOT be hiring bikes from our Bowness location and all bike hire will happen from our Total Adventure shop in Windermere Village and Waterhead, Ambleside.
