The Windermere Summer Solstice Lake Race is an exciting event held on England’s longest lake, at the heart of the beautiful Lake District National Park. The race involves paddlers of all abilities completing either the half or full length of Windermere, and is open to an array of boats from surf skis to canoes. Over the years we have seen everything from whitewater rafts and dragon boats, through to sit-on-top kayaks and handmade wooden canoes. The aim of the game is to get as many paddlers involved, enjoying England’s longest lake on the longest day of the year (or as near to as possible) – some are there just for the journey and some are there to beat the race record.

There are two options for paddlers to choose from:

The Long Course

When: Saturday 17th June
Distance:
 10.5 miles
From: Waterhead
To: Fell Foot

This course is only suitable for experienced / ‘current' paddlers. The long course is the full length of Windermere (Waterhead to Fell Foot). At over TEN MILES long, Windermere is the longest lake in England.

Do not consider entering this category unless you class yourself as being self sufficient in terms of safety and also experienced in paddling good distances. Less able intermediate paddlers are advised to travel in mutually supportive groups. This way in the event of a capsize there should be someone on hand sufficiently experienced to effect a rescue.

The Long Course route will follow the western shoreline until south of Belle Isle. Long Course competitors can then choose their route until finishing at Fell Foot at the south eastern end of Windermere.

Registration will be open from 9am at the entrance to Fell Foot. This will close at 10am as soon as the shuttle leaves.

A shuttle will be provided to move racers from the bottom of the lake at Fell Foot, to the Start of the Race at Waterhead. This will depart from 10am at the Entrance to Fell Foot. Please note, all racers will be responsible for transporting boats to the race start. There will be a 'dry land' briefing at 10.30 with 'on water' race start at 11.00.

The Short Course

When: Saturday 17th June
Distance:
 5.5 miles
From: Bowness (Windermere Canoe Kayak)
To: Fell Foot

This course is for intermediate to experienced paddlers ready to push themselves. We expect most participants with reasonable experience to enter this event.
This is a great family event and a superb way to get youngsters into the sport.

The Short Course will start from Bowness at Windermere Canoe Kayak and end at Fellfoot being approximately 5 miles long. Paddlers are advised to travel in mutually supportive groups. This way in the event of a capsize there should be someone on hand sufficiently experienced to effect a rescue.

To reaffirm: paddlers using closed cockpit kayaks or open canoes should be familiar with what to do in the event of a capsize (self or peer rescue) or remain close to somebody who does for the entire route/competition (must be an agreement with this person).

Parking is available at Fell Foot, this is Pay and Display unless you are a National Trust member.

Race briefing at 10.15, race start at 11.00.

If you are competing in the Short or Long Course and you want to hire a kayak, canoe or other equipment then please call Windermere Canoe Kayak for availability and prices.
